Following the success of the Food Handlers drive, Akal Charitable Hospital and Akal College of Nursing extended their health initiatives to another vital support group: Care Takers. From November 21st to 25th, 2025, a specialized screening camp was organized to address the health needs of care providers. Often, those who care for others neglect their own well-being; this camp ensured over 50 care takers received the medical attention they deserve.
2. Objectives
● "Caring for the Carers": To prioritize the physical well-being of individuals responsible for the care of patients, the elderly, or children.
● Occupational Health Safety: To identify stress-related or physical ailments common in caregiving roles (e.g., hypertension, back strain).
● Early Detection: To screen for silent diseases like diabetes and cardiac issues that could impede their ability to perform their duties safely.
3. Comprehensive Health Services Delivered
The screening was divided into two levels to ensure both general fitness and deep diagnostic evaluation:
A. Basic Screening Profile
● General Physical Examination: Assessment of overall physical condition and musculoskeletal health.
● Vitals Monitoring: Blood Pressure checks to detect hypertension, which is common in high-stress caregiving roles.
● Laboratory Investigations:
o CBC (Complete Blood Count): To screen for anemia and immunity levels.
o Blood Sugar Test: To rule out diabetes.
o Cholesterol Profile: To assess heart health risks.
o Urine Analysis: For detection of infections or kidney issues.
B. Advanced Screening Profile
● ECG (Electrocardiogram): To monitor heart rhythm and electrical activity, crucial for older care takers.
● Chest X-Ray: To ensure respiratory health, particularly important for those working in close contact with vulnerable individuals.
4. Impact & Observations
● Participation: The camp successfully covered 50+ beneficiaries, highlighting the demand for such services among support staff.
● Key Findings: The screening helped identify individuals with elevated blood pressure and early signs of fatigue/burnout, allowing for timely medical intervention and lifestyle counseling.
● Community Trust: This initiative reinforced the institution's commitment to the holistic health of its entire workforce ecosystem, not just patients.
5. Conclusion
The Medical & Health Screening for Care Takers was a vital step in maintaining a healthy support ecosystem at Baru Sahib. By ensuring the fitness of the care takers, the institution indirectly ensures better care and safety for the patients and residents they look after.
