12/11/2025 – 15/11/2025
From November 12th to 15th, 2025, Akal Charitable Hospital and Akal College of Nursing collaborated to conduct a specialized health screening camp for food handlers. Ensuring the health of food service personnel is a critical component of public health safety. The initiative successfully screened over 50 individuals, ensuring they are free from contagious diseases and physically fit for their roles in food preparation and service.
2. Objectives
● To ensure high standards of hygiene and safety in food handling within the community.
● To screen for communicable diseases (such as Tuberculosis and skin infections) that pose a risk in food service environments.
● To assess the general health status of the staff, including non-communicable disease markers like hypertension and diabetes.
3. Scope of Services
The camp offered a tiered screening approach to ensure comprehensive coverage:
A. Basic Screening Profile
Every beneficiary underwent a primary health evaluation consisting of:
● General Physical Examination: To check for visible signs of illness, skin infections, or poor hygiene.
● Vitals Monitoring: Blood Pressure checks to screen for hypertension.
● Laboratory Investigations:
o Complete Blood Count (CBC): To assess general health and detect infection or anemia.
o Blood Sugar Test: Screening for diabetes mellitus.
o Cholesterol Profile: To assess cardiovascular risk.
o Urine Analysis: Essential for detecting urinary tract infections or systemic issues.
B. Advanced Screening Profile
For a more in-depth assessment, the following diagnostic tools were utilized:
● Chest X-Ray: A critical measure for food handlers to rule out pulmonary tuberculosis and other respiratory infections.
● ECG (Electrocardiogram): To evaluate heart function and detect cardiac abnormalities.
4. Observations & Outcomes
● Participation: The drive saw active participation with over 50 beneficiaries attending the screening over the four-day period.
● Health Awareness: Beyond diagnostics, the participants were educated on the importance of personal hygiene, handwashing techniques, and maintaining their own health to protect the community they serve.
● Fitness Certification: The rigorous testing (including X-rays and Urine Analysis) helped in certifying the staff as medically fit for handling food, adhering to safety regulations.
5. Conclusion
The collaboration between Akal Charitable Hospital and Akal College of Nursing resulted in a highly successful screening drive. By focusing on the specific health needs of food handlers, the initiative has directly contributed to the broader goal of community health safety and disease prevention.
