As part of the Community Health Nursing Services, B.Sc. Nursing 3rd-year students from Akal Charitable Hospital & Akal College of Nursing, Eternal University, conducted a School Health Program on 29th and 30th October 2025 at Model School, Baru Sahib. The activity aimed to assess the health and hygiene status of school children, evaluate the school environment, and promote health awareness through interactive educational sessions.

Activities Conducted

The School Health Program was carried out under the guidance of faculty members from the Department of Community Health Nursing. The following activities were undertaken:

1. Assessment of School Infrastructure and Hygiene Facilities:

o Evaluation of classroom ventilation, lighting, drinking water sources, and sanitation facilities.

o Observation of safety measures and environmental cleanliness within the school premises.

2. General Health Assessment of Students:

o Height, weight, vision, and dental check-ups were conducted.

o Identification of minor ailments and referral of children requiring further medical attention.

3. Health Education Sessions: Interactive health awareness sessions were conducted using charts, models, and demonstrations on the following topics:

o Personal Hygiene and Handwashing Practices

o Good Touch and Bad Touch – to promote safety awareness among children

o Balanced and Nutritious Diet – to encourage healthy eating habits

o Menstrual Hygiene – specifically for adolescent girls, to enhance knowledge and break taboos related to menstruation

Outcome and Impact

The program benefitted approximately 100 school children. It enhanced their awareness of personal hygiene, safety, and healthy living. Teachers and students actively participated, making the sessions highly interactive and effective. Nursing students gained practical experience in conducting school health assessments, health education, and community interaction, strengthening their competencies in child and adolescent health promotion.

Conclusion

The School Health Program was a successful community outreach initiative that not only promoted the health and well-being of school children but also provided valuable experiential learning for nursing students. Such initiatives foster the spirit of preventive and promotive health care and strengthen the link between academic learning and community service.
